How often should I post on Social Media?

Recently I came across some stats on the life span of posts on different social media channels like Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook & more.

The conclusion was - Each platform has different time span for contents being posted on them. (Based on a study done by IT comapny Mamsys.)

The graphic above, shows lifespan of a post on individual platforms.

The lifespan of a post on each platform is different & also dictates the affect it has on your boutique. Example - A post on Pinterest is going to have a much longer lifespan than a post on Facebook. There's a huge variation in times.

Knowing these statistics can not only help you understand what platforms to focus on but also how much time to spend on each piece of content & planning your strategy i.e. knowing how often you should be posting.

Let's look at these individually —

  • Twitter — 18 minutes

With a tweet that lasts 18 mins, you shouldn't be putting too much time & effort into it. They are supposed to be short & sweet; maybe even raw & real.

  • Facebook — 5 hours

5 hours is a very effective time when you posting something that's relevant to THAT particular day. The time span also determines the number of times you should be posting.

Example — If you audience is US based & you post late at night, it's useless because you won’t get too much traction on your post as people are either offline or in bed.

It’s better to put your content on hold in that case & post in the morning when they can see (focusing on when your tribe will be online). Thereby helping you decide how many times you want to post in a day.

With so much noise & constant posts on Facebook, the more interest you want to attract from your tribe, the more you’ll have to post. This can be anywhere between 2-4 times or more.

  • Instagram - 21 hours

IG is where everybody loves to spend most of their time on but with the span of only 21 hours, your post is NOT going to last more than a day.

It's important to put time & effort into each post but it's MORE important to be consistent when posting if you want to see better results. Also posting 2-3 times a day can get you more traction but don’t do it if you can’t keep up with it!

  • YouTube — 20 days

In comparison to other platforms, YouTube really gives you a better chance of gaining traction! If you have a piece of content or an idea that will last this long, make sure it's good (both execution & content wise) if you reallly want to bank on it.

Unlike other platforms, you can post less (at least once a week than everyday) & yet stay relevant. It’ll help your tribe to catch up on the past videos (anytime they subscribe to you or come across your channel) & follow you to keep up with the latest ones.

  • Pinterest — 3 months & Blog — 2 years

Pinterest & blogs are the ultimate secret weapon in keeping your content relevant!

Using catchy images, right searchable keywords & captions in Pinterest can really help you get your products & content in front of your tribe more than Facebook or even IG.

The same goes for blogs. Adding relevant keywords & creating content around WHAT your tribe is searching for, will reap you results for 2-freaking-years.

Unlike platforms like Facebook or IG, you don’t have to think of creating NEW content ever.single.day. You can focus on providing high quality content once a week or month & get more results.

Bonus, if you link your Blog or Pinterest with your Facebook or IG post, you can also increase their lifespan. Interesting isn't it?

Knowing the lifespan of each piece of content you create can help you create a better social media strategy for your online boutique.

Example — For a post that lasts 21 hrs (on Instagram), I spent an hr working on it; from research to content & graphic, I put a lot of time to ensure that my tribe got the best value out of it.. all while deciding WHEN to post so it's visible too!

I’m sure you are doing it too. But what then?

Is that it?

Is that what alll the effort was for?

If you ask me.. my answer is NO!

This is where “Re-purposing your content” comes in sooo you take a post from a lifespan of 5 hours in case of Facebook or 21 hours in case of Instagram to more.

I re-purposed the content I create for IG for different platforms so I could not only increase the life span of it but also work smarter NOT harder by distributing content on all platforms & reaching my tribe.

I’m curious to know — Did any of these social media post life span surprise you??! Did you know about them before? Do you consider re-purposing your content to ensure more traction or have you been focusin’ on just posting?

Talk to me girl!

Note — I'm not saying ditch any of the low lifespan platforms but it's definitely time to start focusing more on platforms that offer more return & eyeballs to your content & PRODUCTS to maximize your return on (time) investment.
