How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

It's a human tendency to compare ourselves with others. Even if we don't want to and don't accept it, somewhere down the line we do and it affects us too. We compare ourselves to their lifestyle, their jobs, their talents and even the way they look and do things. We compare how they are able to do things so easily that we can't forgetting that they might be thinking the same way about us.

We look at their Facebook profile, Instagram pictures and Snapchat stories and wonder how they have it all figured out. We spend so much time trying to be more like someone else and less like us, thinking it will make us happy or give us the success we are searching for. But the truth is, it won't.

Theodore Roosevelt said - Comparison is the thief of joy. Another person's success is not your failure.

Comparison is thief of joy and confidence. It makes us feel that we are not good enough and we constantly strive to be like someone else and forget who we really are. It's good to read stories and be inspired by others, look up to them for their accomplishments and learn from them but being jealous and comparing our beginnings with their middle is erring.

The more we are going to compare, the more we are going to feel bad about ourselves. Why do we have to compare ourselves with other people who are just as human as we are?

How can we judge without knowing what's behind the scenes?

So how do you break this habit and stop comparing yourself with others?

Here are a few simple tips for you -

  • Take note - Sometimes we unconsciously compare ourselves to others. We don't even know we are doing it. Take note and STOP yourself there and then. Become conscious of your thoughts.

  • Count your blessings - One of the best ways to stop comparison is to count your blessings. Focus on what's present and not on what's absent. You have so many things to be grateful for, that others might not. You can do this by starting your day writing 5 things you are grateful for and end your day with 5 days you are grateful for that happened to you today.

  • Focus on your strengths - Universe granted us all with strengths and weaknesses. Focus on what you are good at and be proud of it. Celebrate, but don't brag.

  • It's OKAY to be imperfect - Newsflash!! No one is perfect. And it's A-OKAY. It's our imperfections that make us beautiful, that make us who we are. We need to love ourselves despite of our flaws. One of these meditations / mantras by Maria Pallas - I Love And Value Myself Unconditionally is a great way to start loving yourself.

  • Focus on your journey - Last but not the least life is a journey not a series of competitions you have to win. Embrace it, don't be so focused on reaching the finish line that you forget to find joy in your journey.

The only person you should be comparing yourself with is the person you were yesterday.
